Hi folks. So, seeing that I'm the nice person that I am I figured I would help all those out who are having issues with their Macs. I work for Apple at the campus here in Austin. So if anyone has any technical question regarding their Apple desktop or portable, post them here and I'll respond as quickly as possible.

my family apple (G5) has totally screwed up. When you first plug it in and turn it on it works, but much slower than it used to. The problem starts when you lets it go to sleep. After that it freezes and won't turn on again unless you unplug it and let it sit for a few hours. -_-

help! we've taken it in a few times, but never to the apple store. I don't want to be charged out the ass and the nearest apple store isn't all that near.

Fishgills,
1.Reset SMC (system management controller)
Is it a desktop or portable?
A.Portable
-shut down computer
-unplug anything connected to computer
-remove battery from computer
-with nothing connected to computer (including power), press and hold
power button down for 15 seconds
-put battery back in and boot computer
B. Desktop
-turn computer off
-unplug anything connected to computer, including power cable
-leave everything unplugged for about 15 seconds, then plug just power cable, mouse, and keyboard back
-if issue resolved, plug other items back in one at a time

If not resolved:
Reset PRAM
-shut computer down
-turn computer back on
-as soon as you turn computer back on, press and hold these four keys simultaneously (P, R, Command, Option) (the command key is the same as the apple key)
-you're going to press and hold those four keys down as soon as you turn the computer back on and keep holding them down until you hear 2 startup chimes

If still not resolved after this:
Archive and Install (Preserving Users and Network Settings). You will need your os discs that came with computer for this (install dvd 1)
-turn computer on
-insert install dvd 1
-turn computer off
-turn computer back on and press and hold the "C" key until you see an apple with a spinning wheel. once you see spinning wheel you can let "C" key go.
-mac installer should come up and ask you to choose you language, choose english and hit continue.
-license agreement should come up
-youll get a screen asking you to choose your destination, choose Macintosh HD
-the next screen will tell you that you have to change your installation options, choose options and select "Archive and Install". Make sure you check "Preserve Users and Network Settings"
-this will reinstall the base layer of the operating system without erasing any of your files, apps, etc.

If this does not work, the end all be all will be doing a complete erase and install. (you will lose all data on hard drive unless you back up regularly)

**These steps can be a little confusing and intimidating, if you need more help message me your number and ill call you and walk you through the steps this evening.

Correction: It worked for a little while, so I'm going to try the last option asap. I'll let you know how it goes.

i reset the PRAM again just to see and apparently it worked. I've given a few weeks of testing just to make sure, but it seems back to normal. thanks again so much.

^^ The easiest thing to do is to get an external harddrive and just put all your files onto it, then put those files onto your new computer.

other than that I don't think that there is any other way.

I used to burn EVERYTHING onto 203948029384 CD's because DVD's were expensive.. THEN came onto DVD's.. but now externals are NOT that expensive AT ALL!! my 500GB portable was ~$100 my dad got 1TB (not portable) for about $100 as well...

if your still in your warranty just take it to the genius bar at the apple store.. if your not in warranty i would still try and take it to the genius bar and have them help you.

what's wrong with it by the way? all you said is "it won't work" what do you mean by that? it wont charge? wont turn on? wont play music? wont update?
